JUSTICE AS TRAUMA SUMMIT

Susan MacRae

Susan MacRae is a childhood abuse survivor who signed a nondisclosure agreement in 1997.   Although at the time of signing her NDA, Susan wanted confidentiality, after her abuser died in 2015, she learned that she was still bound by the clause.  In 2018, she sought to lift the NDA in the BC Supreme Court, but her request was denied, with the judge stating that ‘there wasn’t enough evidence of psychological damage from the Nondisclosure agreement.’

Since 2018, she has lobbied both provincial and federal politicians to bring in NDA laws that allow for the victim to choose their own degree and duration of confidentiality. In 2022, Susan appeared on W5’s ‘Hush Money’ episode to detail the difficulties of lifting a confidentiality clause, even after the abuser has died.

In 2023, she co-founded THE RESTITUTION PROJECT with Sherri Thomson to bring awareness to the lifelong effects of an NDA for childhood sexual abuse.  Originally from Alberta, Susan lives in Vancouver where she works as a professor and writer/artist.
